Sunday
7th September 2003
saw the fourth Regent
Street Festival,
part of the Totally London
Tour, a series of events
that showcase the best
of London, kicked off
with a celebrity opening
at 12 noon and the festivities
continuing until 8pm.
Regent
Street was closed to traffic
for the whole day when
more than 200,000
visitors came to
what promised to be the
most fantastic and truly
unique international
shopping, eating, drinking
and entertainment experience.
Shopping
in Regent Street already
takes you round the world
with retailers from America,
Australia, Japan, Belgium,
Italy, and Spain, plus
there's the very best
of top traditional English
brands including Aquascutum,
Austin Reed, Burberry,
Liberty, Wedgwood and
Dickins & Jones. For the
real shopaholics, a retail
extravaganza could
be had from 5-8
pm on Thursday 4th September,
by way of an exclusive
Evening Standard late
night shopping offer.
A fantastic 20%
off was available
in many of the restaurant
and retail outlets as
a special prelude to the
festival fun.
Sunday
saw wine
tasting with tango
dancers from Argentina
and food
flavours from all
four corners of the world,
including Thai, Indian,
South American, French,
Chinese and Italian. With
such an array of choice
the festival promised
to be the ideal start
to Sunday proving lunch
needn't be in traditional
Sunday style!
You
were entertained in style
too - there was
live Pop, Jazz, Salsa,
and Classical music
from the BBC Stage supported
by Bovis Lend Lease. People
Enjoyed Regent Street
as never before with performances
from
top artists such
as Jamie Callum, Roachford,
Amici, United Colours
of Sound, BBC Prom in
the Park, CBBC Prom, Jive
Aces and much more. BBC
Radio London 94.9 FM
were capturing the full
atmosphere of the Festival
live on air.
Especially
for children, The
Tweenies were doing
a guest live spot on the
BBC
Stage in advance
of their UK-wide tour.
And of course, festival
frolics were in abundance
with the traditional dodgems,
carousel and Ferris wheel
available for children
of all ages.
Entry
to the Regent Street Festival
was free as well as parking
in Burlington Car Park.
Programmes, giving full
details with times of
events and happenings,
were available on the
day and sold for a £1
in aid of BBC Children
In Need. Best of all,
with every programme purchased,
there was the opportunity
to enter into an amazing
prize draw with
the chance to win an incredible
318ci convertible BMW!
